Abstract

Objective: This research aimed to phenomenologically explore the lived experiences of student teachers at Farhangian University (Ardebil Campus) regarding the role of spirituality in shaping their professional teaching identity. Spirituality, as a fundamental existential dimension, is considered a source for meaning-making in professional life, ethical commitments, and responsibility in the educational mission, and it contributes to strengthening a dynamic and multidimensional professional identity.

Methods: This qualitative study, employing a phenomenological approach, examined the experiences of 11 student teachers using semi-structured interviews during the academic year 2025-2026. Data were analyzed using the seven-stage Colaizzi method. Validity and reliability were ensured through triangulation, peer review, and participant confirmation.

Findings: The findings indicated that spirituality, in conjunction with Islamic ethical and educational dimensions and practical experiences, addresses the challenges of professional identity formation in student teachers. Key categories included “Divine Presence and Spiritual Connection,” “Ethical and Professional Guidance,” “Sincerity and Honesty,” “Educational and Ethical Atmosphere,” “Academic Up-to-dateness and Skill-orientation,” “Responsible Love,” “Humility and Respect,” “Reformative Action,” “Patience,” and “Justice.”

Conclusion: Spirituality encompasses dimensions such as divine presence, ethical guidance, sincerity, love, and patience, all of which are influential in shaping professional teaching identity. It is recommended that future research employ mixed-methods or longitudinal approaches, and investigate the effects of spirituality-focused curricula. Intervention studies based on spiritual reflection can aid in training committed and value-driven student teachers.
