Abstract

Purpose: The present study sought to identify the initiatives of university professors in using instructional icebreakers and the consequences of those icebreakers.

Method: This research is a descriptive and applied study that was conducted using the phenomenological method and interviews. The research population consisted of 32 faculties members of Farhangian University of Alborz Province, of whom 11 were selected as samples and informants through purposive sampling. The collected data were analyzed using a three-stage coding method, and the coding results were provided to the informants for validation in order to obtain valid results by re-referencing.

Findings: The research findings included 16 types of icebreakers, each of which has its own unique stages; the findings also showed that the use of icebreakers resulted in 10 types of results and consequences, the most important of which are increased participation and engagement of learners, mental and physical preparation of students, and attractiveness of the classroom.

Conclusion: it can be said that using icebreakers can be an effective solution to prevent and stop students from becoming bored and unmotivated in the classroom.
