Abstract

The purpose of this research is to reinterpret the concept of rational education within Spinoza’s intellectual system and to elucidate its potential for addressing contemporary educational crises. The study adopts a qualitative framework, combining two complementary methods: descriptive analysis and conceptual reconstruction. The study uses a descriptive method to identify key notions in Spinoza’s works and modern interpretations, while conceptual analysis reconstructs and integrates them into a coherent theoretical model. The findings indicate that, in Spinoza’s philosophy, rational education is conceived as a gradual and existential process that elevates the human mind from the domains of imagination and emotion to the higher levels of reason and ultimately intuition. Through this ascent, the individual learns to live in harmony with the necessary laws of nature and thereby attains what Spinoza calls true freedom. Importantly, rational education in Spinoza’s system is not confined to the cultivation of logical reasoning. Rather, it encompasses a comprehensive vision of moral, ontological, and civic formation. This vision unfolds along three interrelated paths: 1- Emotional liberation and deepened self-understanding, 2- Transition to active reason and transcendence of the merely speculative realm, 3- Formation of social rationality and the possibility of free collective life. Taken together, these dimensions constitute an organic model for contemporary education—one that seeks to move beyond information-centered instruction toward the development of free, autonomous, and participatory human beings. Consequently, Spinoza’s conception of rational education offers a profound theoretical horizon for reimagining education in terms of individual emancipation, moral growth, and democratic coexistence.
