Abstract
Background: Motivation is a developing research field in higher education, with the potential of in-depth studies to improve the learning environment. Despite the high volume of publications in this field, the intellectual structure of researchers and its perspective are unknown.
Objectives and method: This research, using the scientometric method and based on extracting 4884 international articles from the Scopus database, seeks to identify the time distribution pattern of publications, display collaborations and contributions of researchers, research centers, and emerging trends and future research trends and directions.
Findings: Drawing conceptual images of research and examining thematic trends and knowledge boundaries in different time periods, including: the first period, before 2000: the weak, abandoned scientific field, the second period, before 2010, the infancy period. The third period: before 2015, the beginning of growth, and the fourth period, before 2020, and the last period, from 2020 until now, is the period of growth, development and maturity of this scientific field.
Result: The studies indicate a rapid increase in the number of studies in this field, especially with an interdisciplinary approach. Also, the axes of motivation have been changed and expanded in accordance with the change in the goals and motivations of education.
